A vertical stone south east
declining dial, 1000 mm high by 750 mm wide located in the Italian Garden
between and in the "Spitting Men" fountain at Powerscourt Gardens. Both ends of
hour lines marked with Roman numerals V to XII, the dial reads to 12:45. It
also shows 30 and 10 min lines with the half hour marked with Arabic "30".
The "Spitting Men" were bought in Paris in 1872 and the dial would date from that period. The bronze plaque above the dial reads "HORAS NON NUMERO NISI SERENAS" - I count not hours that are not serene. Powerscourt is at Enniskerry, 20 km south of Dublin off the N11 at the Bray exit. 45 acres of formal gardens, sweeping terraces, statuary and ornamental lakes together with secret hollows, rambling walks, walled gardens and over 200 variations of trees and shrubs.
