Ahakista Memorial Sundial

On the shore near Ahakista village on the Sheep's Head penninsula in West Cork, 20Kms SE of Bantry is a 1500mm diameter, modern stone sundial, delineated by Owen Deignan, made by Cork sculptor Ken Thompson. A memorial to those who died when Air India Flight 182 from Montreal to Delhi blew up at an altitude of 31,000 feet over the south-west tip of Ireland, killing all 329 aboard including 60 children under the age of 10.

The inscription around the sundial reads: "TIME FLIES¤SUNS RISE AND SHADOWS FALL¤LET IT PASS BY¤LOVE REIGNS FOREVER OVERALL"

The shadow from a nodus on the gnomon coincides with a mark on the dial at the time of the explosion on board the plane, 8:13 a.m.UTC on 23 June 1985.
